STRIX SYSTEMS’ WIRELESS MESH NETWORK DEPLOYED IN MILTON KEYNES, FASTEST-GROWING CITY IN THE U.K.

Strix Systems, the market leader in wireless mesh networks, announced today that Briteyellow, a wireless communications specialist, in partnership with Invest Milton Keynes, has deployed Strix’s Outdoor Wireless System® OWS for its city-wide wireless mesh broadband network in Milton Keynes, U.K.
Milton Keynes, one of the largest and fastest growing cities in the U.K., is also the country’s most successful business center outside London. The city is home to some of the world’s most successful companies, including BP, DaimlerChrysler, Homebase, KPMG, Suzuki GB, and VWAudi.
Strix partner Briteyellow is deploying the mesh network, which currently covers the central business districts, is now being expanded to cover 40 sq. mi. of city center, and will eventually blanket the entire city (100 sq. mi.). The network enhances the city’s business reputation and reduces communications costs for local businesses and residents.
The new Britezone network offers state-of-the-art enhanced WiFi services designed for mobile VoIP. Voice services are available as a paid bundle with data – and potentially video – across the entire city center. In contrast, the existing cable and telco service providers were incapable of delivering the quality, bandwidth, and mobility such services require.
Briteyellow and Invest Milton Keynes chose the Strix OWS because it is the industry-leading platform for network flexibility, robust mesh infrastructure, and roaming. Eventually 1,000 Strix multi-radio OWS nodes will provide high-speed public Internet and private business access, enabling the municipality and businesses to participate in the public/private network partnership.
Strix’s Access/One Indoor Wireless System (IWS), the industry’s only enterprise-class mesh networking product, provides enhanced services to businesses. Small businesses and residential users can employ the Strix Edge Wireless System (EWS) 100 to gain full high-speed access to the Britezone network’s free and enhanced paid services. The EWS 100 also enables mobile VoIP as users move from indoors to the outdoor municipal network.
As an extension of the Strix OWS, Briteyellow recently installed Strix IWS network at Ashorne Hill Management Training and Conference Centre, near Leamington Spa in Warwickshire. This ambitious project includes 30 IWS nodes that provide secured wireless communications over the entire campus, including 42 training facilities and 118 suites. The solution also enables the Centre to deliver a steady stream of new and innovative services for training organizations and delegates.
The network will become the backbone of the Centre’s IT system, which required a very high degree of security, scalability, and flexibility. The Strix wireless mesh network also overcame the difficulties presented by the Centre’s old high-density walls and a restriction on physical works allowed to the listed building, which is officially designated by the English Heritage agency as being of special architectural, historical, or cultural significance.

The Strix Access/One OWS and IWS modular mesh products deliver the largest capacity (up to six radios and 768 users per node, three to six times the norm), highest throughput (five times the norm at 35 Mbps), and best scalability (users can add more radio boards or new technologies).
